It's about affinity and it's a trio. A trio made up of two altos of two different species, to the nearest half-tone. One is made of strings, wood, and horsehair, the other is made of metal, reed, leather, and plastic. The third point of the triangle is mainly made of electrons and membranes. It's a matter of infinity, but there are three of us. Elective affinities & electrical affinities. What to say about an upcoming music? It is improbable. Attention to the details: extreme. Tension at all. On purpose, without design. Rubbing, blowing and membranes, alone in the center of the cauldron. All with silence probably. And at least once, the maximum without prior prohibition. Probably, at least. There's noise, too. There will be... and in a triangle.
The trio Gaudenz Badrutt (electronics), Jean-Luc Guionnet (alto saxophone) and Frantz Loriot (viola) met for the first time at the Biel event Joyful Noise in December 2018.
Very quickly, the ensemble agreed on a formal and tonal understanding, giving the trio a special sound that combines and intertwines different aesthetics from electroacoustic music to contemporary music.
The musicians continued their musical work in 2019, coming together in February 2020 for a world premiere residency at Les Instants Chavirés in Montreuil (F), a stronghold for avant-garde and experimental jazz music.
The trio has developed and affirmed its sonic and musical identity through a persistent improvisational practice linked to the question of form, while incorporating concepts that guide improvisation and by arranging the three instruments with historically informed aesthetics to create unexplored sonic fields.
