Originally formed by Ben Gerstein, Jean-Brice Godet, and Frantz Loriot, IF was born out of a desire to organize long working sessions that would allow artists (from all disciplines) from the local scene to be integrated into their project, which combines instrumental music, music for media, electronic music, and video. Each time IF performs, it adapts to the context and imagines new spaces for play, creating a collective performance co-composed by the team assembled for the occasion.     
During our first laboratory residency at La Maison Matrice in Crémines in July 2023, during a musical journey through the forest, we encountered this thousand-year-old yew tree. The confrontation between its immutable temporality and that of our lives and our era echoes our approach, in which the immediacy of improvisation meets the immutability of recorded media. In English, “if” evokes the possibility of an imaginary elsewhere.
The hybrid instrumentation, deliberately light and wireless, allows us to perform in a wide variety of contexts, both indoors and outdoors, with energy autonomy during the performance.
